Vatican for a 2-state solution?

Post by Fidesetratio »

Hello all,

I just read that the Pope Bxvi has arrived in Israel and though he is calling for peace between palestinians and Israel, which is a good thing of course, but it seems to me that he may be "hinting" for a 2 state solution as well?

I am interested on those here what they think, and if the Vatican did come out and endorse a 2 state solution too, whether there may be some conflict of conscience.
For myself, I am supportive of the state of Israel as it is, but are we also called to be obediant to the Pope and support his views?

Peace to all,
Rob

hi Rob,

The pope and Vatican's view on the State of Israel are a matter of Vatican diplomacy and not of doctrine of faith. Therefore I think that there is no problem for Catholics to respectfully disagree with them.

I think it should not be viewed as political but rather as a message of love which Christ Himself so heavily emphasized. However, I think most likely both sides will represent it this way. The Holy father is studiously avoiding taking sides. He is advocating peace, reconciliation, mutual respect, and security for both peoples. On the other hand...if we look at the local Christians living in the Holy Land particularly in Palestine, they are mostly Arabs. I think it is natural for a shepherd to look after his flock. The Pope's concern would logically drift to them. I don't see it as an intervention in the middle of a political, religious, right to land, etc. conflict but rather a genuine interest in the humanity and the continuance of his flocks' religious freedom.

On the link given above from this news agency - Reuters which stated that the Pope calls for a two-state - a reassertion of the Vatican policy. Now, I may have been asleep (as this reporter have strongly written on his article) when the Pope has offered this solution...for I cannot recall the Pope literally saying this. This goes to show how the media can be forcefully wrong at times (intentionally or unintentionally). It has never been the position of the Church to offer a political solution but rather it focuses on the key issues which is the peaceful co-existence of all living communities.

Lastly, on a more personal note, the "big" people behind the scenes deliberately snubs Pope Benedict's true purpose of visiting the Holy Land. They took advantage of his very presence using it as a photo op and a sounding voice for propaganda. As the Pope brings his message of peace and love, these people voice their tale and seem to even give justification to why they hate. On the other hand, it amazes me - considering most Palestinians are muslims and most Israelis are Jewish and yet both heap so much expectation on the shoulders of Pope Benedict. I mean in my own personal opinion, in a backhanded way, I see it as an incredible respect for the Papacy. Pope Benedict is only a man in full service to God trying to preach His message of peace, hope, justice, sacrifies, and love.

Well I certainly can not see how anyone could or should disagree with what the Pope said.

"I plead with all those responsible to explore every possible avenue in the search for a just resolution of the outstanding difficulties, so that both peoples may live in peace in a homeland of their own, within secure and internationally recognised borders,"

Dear All,

I think today most people speak from earthly knowledge. I wish people speak with spiritual meaning i.e what exactly the Bible tells on issues like this.

Dear All,

If I have not mistaken, the support of Israel is likely to reduce during the end times. The question remains-Will the Catholics across the globe stand solidly behind Israel till the end ?????? or Will the Catholics give concessions, make compromises here and there and allow Israel to stand alone??????. Let us pray for Israel.
